Qualifications
No exam required under the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide (NY HELPS) Program.
- Auditor 1/State Program Examiner Trainee 1 (Fiscal)
- A bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 24 undergraduate or graduate semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation.
- Auditor 1/State Program Examiner Trainee 2 (Fiscal)
- A bachelor's degree and 24 undergraduate and/or graduate semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation.
- One year of qualifying professional accounting and/or auditing experience gained after meeting the educational qualifications.
OR
- A master's degree or doctoral degree in accounting, business administration, business management, computer science, computer information systems, or related IT field; criminal justice, economics, engineering; finance, mathematics, public administration, public or community health, public policy, political science, or statistics.
- Auditor 1/State Program Examiner 1 (Fiscal)
- A bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 24 undergraduate or graduate credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation.
- Two years of qualifying professional accounting and/or auditing experience gained after meeting the educational qualifications.
OR
- A master's degree or doctoral degree in accounting, business administration, business management, computer science, computer information systems, or related IT field; criminal justice, economics, engineering; finance, mathematics, public administration, public or community health, public policy, political science, or statistics;
- One year of qualifying professional accounting and/or auditing experience gained after meeting the educational qualifications.
Qualifications Notes:
Courses such as business law, economics, statistics, and most finance courses, although taken as part of an accounting curriculum, cannot be counted toward the 24 semester credit hours.
Experience limited to teaching courses, bookkeeping, maintaining payroll records, accounts payable, accounts receivable, or preparing tax returns is not considered professional accounting/auditing experience.

Duties
Auditors/Examiners could work on a variety of audits of State expenditures, State agencies, public authorities, not-for-profit organizations that receive State funding, school districts and local governments such as towns and villages and Entities with the probability of substantial return of abandoned property to the State.
You will provide on-site services to local and state governments, and you can expect to travel to localities within your assigned region. Your work will help to ensure that tax dollars are spent prudently and productively.
You will perform financial and performance audits that help to ensure that taxpayers are getting their value for their tax dollars.
Some audit work may also include a focus on information technology and the security around the systems that support operations in the local and state government organizations.
