Qualifications
No exam required under the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide (NY HELPS) Program.
- A bachelor's or higher-level degree in computer science, computer information systems, telecommunications, or management information systems.
—OR—
- A bachelor's or higher-level degree, including or supplemented by 15 credit hours in computer science courses.
—OR—
- A bachelor's or higher-level degree in any field and at least one year of the experience described below.*
—OR—
- A minimum of 60 college semester credit hours including at least 15 credit hours in computer science courses and one year of the experience described below.*
—OR—
- Two years of experience in the following computer related areas:
- Network, server, storage, and systems management
- Telecommunications
- IT customer support and training
- Computer installation, diagnosis and repair
- Technical writing
- Computer security
- Knowledge management
- Database administration, design and management
- Internet/intranet development, design, and maintenance
- Information technology project management
- Design and development of geographic information systems or computer aided drafting applications;
- Computer programming
- Business/systems analysis
- Program design
- Program testing

- You're eligible under the 55 b/c program,
- For 70.1 and/or 52.6 transfer to an Information Technology Specialist 2, salary grade (SG)-18, you must have one year of permanent competitive, or 55-b/55-c service in an approved title for transfer allocated to an SG-16 or above. To determine if you're current Civil Service title is eligible for transfer to this title, visit the Career Mobility website. Appointments via transfer must not result in a second, consecutive transfer with an advancement of more than two S-grades or one M-grade. Depending on qualifications, you may be required to serve a 1 or 2-year traineeship that leads to the full level SG-18 position.
Duties
- Install and configure new software.
- Conduct operational readiness tests on newly built system components.
- Administer system components utilizing tools, techniques, and relevant computer capabilities.
- Create and maintain installation and system operations documentation for system components.
- Prepare “how-to” documents for team members to use as a quick reference to complete assigned tasks.
- Research available information and standards for maintaining systems.
- Assist with developing and/or updating procedures with the most up-to-date information.
- Participate in the development of technical and/or functional requirements.
- Communicate and collaborate with technical and non-technical staff to implement new procedures.
- Monitor and maintain the efficiency, reliability, and effectiveness of the Retirement Benefit Administration PeopleSoft system, and associated third-party systems.
- Apply updates, fixes, and patches to the system(s).
- Collaborate with other systems personnel to coordinate and properly apply system updates.
- Communicate regularly with the supervisor on software issues, system problems and project needs, as identified.
- Troubleshoot and resolve software and systems issues.
- Migrate code and/or file changes using the Phire version control software.
- Coordinate system outages to bring system components down and/or up.
- Support testing teams in the development and execution of test scripts.
- Provide on-call support for nightly batch processing and emergency migrations.
