Minimum Qualifications

No exam required under the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide (NY HELPS) Program. 

For appointment to the SENIOR COMPUTER OPERATOR position you must have: 

  • High school or high school equivalency diploma
  • One year of full-time experience in the operation of large scale/commercial printing equipment, a mainframe or medium to large server, multi-variable print production, or information technology related activities.

  • You're currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title.
  • You're eligible under the 55 b/c program.
  • You have one year of permanent competitive service in an approved civil service title and qualify for a 70.1, 52.6, or 70.4 transfer. Visit the Career Mobility website to determine if you're eligible. 
    • Transfers must not result in a second, consecutive transfer with an advancement of more than two S-grades or one M-grade. Depending on qualifications, you may be required to serve a 1 or 2-year traineeship that leads to the full level position.

Duties

  • Monitors all system consoles and hardware diagnostic displays (console operations).
  • Schedules and properly configures production batch workloads (production control).
  • Operates tape drives and robotic devices (tape processing).
  • Operates print devices that produce the output from various data processing program runs (print processing).
  • Performs supervisory responsibilities.

Telecommuting

The Office of the New York State Comptroller (OSC) supports telecommuting where it is reasonable to do so based upon the agency’s mission and operational needs. Generally, employees new to OSC will be restricted from telecommuting for at least 8 calendar weeks. After the initial 8 calendar week restriction, if an employee’s primary residence location, duties, and work performance are aligned with telecommuting and operational needs they may be allowed to do so. Generally, OSC employees may telecommute up to 5 days per pay period but may be approved to telecommute less.
