DiNapoli: Tax Breaks From IDAs Continue to Climb

New York's Industrial Development Agencies (IDAs) provided $695 million in net tax exemptions in 2015, an increase of 10 percent from the prior year, according to a report issued today by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

Comptroller DiNapoli and Mayor Brown Urge Buffalo Residents to Claim $88 Million in Lost Money

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown today urged local residents to search for unclaimed funds during a news conference at City Hall. DiNapoli said there is $88,208,650 owed to residents in the city of Buffalo. There is over $265 million owed to residents in Western New York.

DiNapoli: Bradford Fire Company Treasurer Pleads Guilty to Stealing $8,500 in Public Funds

Former Bradford Volunteer Fire Company treasurer Sherry Hamilton pleaded guilty to Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree after an audit and investigation found she misappropriated approximately $8,500 in fire company funds, State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced today.

DiNapoli’s office worked with the New York State Police and Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker. Their joint efforts discovered Hamilton misappropriated funds by taking "advance" payments on company activities and manipulating company records to conceal her crimes. She was arrested in July 2016.

DiNapoli: Village Fiscal Stress Declines Again

State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli's Fiscal Stress Monitoring System has identified nine villages in New York in some level of fiscal stress in 2016. Three villages were designated in "moderate fiscal stress" and six as "susceptible to fiscal stress." Last year, a total of 18 villages were listed in fiscal stress.

"Michael Klein started stealing from the public just after he was appointed treasurer at the Mahopac Fire Department. He used his $5.7 million embezzlements to buy a yacht, a Mercedes, a Corvette, and Pandora jewels for his wife. My ongoing partnerships with U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, the New York State Police, the IRS and FBI brought Mr. Klein to justice today with his guilty plea. Klein will be ordered to repay the $5.7 million and is going to federal prison for his crimes."
