The New York State and Local Retirement System (NYSLRS) is one of the largest retirement systems in the world, administering benefits for more than 1.2 million members, retirees and beneficiaries.
NYSLRS administers two distinct systems:
- The Employees’ Retirement System (ERS), which provides benefits to employees of participating public employers in non-teaching positions outside of New York City, including uniformed services personnel, such as correction officers and sheriffs.
- The Police and Fire Retirement System (PFRS), which provides benefits for police officers and firefighters of participating public employers outside of New York City.
New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli is the administrative head of NYSLRS. As fiduciary, the Comptroller acts in the best interests of NYSLRS members, retirees and beneficiaries and is responsible for ensuring the different benefit programs offered by NYSLRS are managed properly and effectively.
The Comptroller is also the trustee of the Common Retirement Fund (Fund), which was valued at $267.4 billion as of March 31, 2024. The Fund supports the benefits of current and future retirees and is consistently recognized as one of the best-managed and best-funded plans in the nation.
See our Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for additional financial information about the Fund’s performance and position, and read our Fact Sheet for the latest NYSLRS stats.
