Advance Your Career & Salary
State service offers career mobility and annual salary increases using a salary grade and pay structure. Employees are hired at the starting salary and receive annual increases based on grade level and set through union contract negotiations. After six years, employees earn a higher fixed amount, increasing their salary to the maximum amount of their pay range.
Employees may also receive additional payments or increases at times. In 2023, the Public Employees Federation negotiated higher increases and additional longevity and education payments for their members.

The State Comptroller’s office is New York’s fiscal watchdog, protector of taxpayer dollars. We audit and report on where New York’s money goes and how equitably its spent, provide contract oversight, pay the State’s bills, including payroll for over State employees, and return more than $1.5 million in unclaimed funds to lost owners each day.

Our Leadership
Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli built his career in public service.
He was the first 18-year-old in New York State to hold public office as a trustee on the Mineola Board of Education in 1972. After time in the public sector, he was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1986 and represented 16th District in Nassau County, Long Island for 20 years.
Tom was appointed the 54th Comptroller of New York State in February 2007 and elected by New Yorkers in 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022.
As Comptroller he’s gained a trusted reputation for fighting fraud, providing fiscal oversight and pushing for financial accountability; for his stewardship of the state pension fund, and commitment to empowering New Yorkers with financial literacy.

Traineeships
Launch a new career or enhance your skillset in a one or two-year traineeship! Many trainees are appointed to the full position level upon completion of these programs.
Student Employment
We host student employment opportunities throughout the academic year. We work with schools statewide to place students in our agency to gain valuable experience.
Future Forward Internship Program
Our Future Forward Internship Academy is a paid academic and experiential summer learning program for college students of all majors.
Students choose from one of five career tracks and earn up to 13 semester credit hours:

- Business Analysis
Information Technology Apprenticeships
Gain application development experience while earning your computer science degree with our Chief Information Office.
In this paid one-year experience, participants will:
- Gather and refine project requirements.
- Analyze functional requirements and develop technical specifications.
- Code new programs and modules and update existing ones.
