This retirement plan summary describes the benefits available to Tier 3, 4, 5 and 6 Employees’ Retirement System sheriffs, undersheriffs and certain deputy sheriffs who elect the 25-year plan (Section 551), the 25-year plan with additional benefits of Section 551(e), the 20-year plan (Section 552), or the 20-year plan with additional benefits of Section 553. These benefits are provided by the New York State Retirement and Social Security Law (RSSL) as enacted by the New York State Legislature.

Throughout this publication, you will find references to “Sections” and “Articles” that refer to the RSSL. The New York State and Local Retirement System, headed by the Comptroller of the State of New York, administers this plan. Our main office is in Albany, New York.
